Be Hurricane-Ready:
Your Hurricane Preparation Checklist
If you live in an area that may experience a hurricane, you should prepare months in advance to protect your family and your property. Preparations include reinforcing your roof, windows, doors, and any structures outside your home.
Roof damage is one of the most common problems after hurricanes, and regular inspections, maintenance, and repairs can help reduce the severity of hurricane roof damage. You should also be prepared with an emergency kit in case you need to evacuate.

Hurricane Categories
Hurricanes are categorized by their wind speeds on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale.
They're split into five categories as follows:
- Category 1: Winds between 74-95 m.p.h
- Category 2: Winds between 96-110 m.p.h
- Category 3: Winds between 111-129 m.p.h
- Category 4: Winds between 130-156 m.p.h
- Category 5: Winds of 157 m.p.h or greater
To be considered a major hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center, a storm must reach Category 3 or above.
Category 2 hurricanes can cause serious roof damage and knock out power for days to weeks.
Category 5 hurricanes can destroy homes, trees, and power lines, leaving an area without power for weeks or months. But Category 1 hurricanes or even tropical storms can still cause major damage, so it's important to be prepared before the start of hurricane season.
